Hi, I have a wi-fi card with an acx111 chipset (namely a D-Link DWL G520+) and it seems that x64 Windows 7 doesn't support this card. It's not installed automatically during the installation of Windows It's unable to install it with the automatic driver installation of the hardware manager It doesn't recognize the latest driver I found on the manufacturer's website (drivers for x86 XP, though) I was unable to find any x64 Windows-drivers for this chip at all. So is there a workaround because I read that with an x86-system it works out of the box. Hi Sinon, Thanks for posting to 'Getting Ready for Windows 7' community forum.
What you might try is to use the Troubleshoot Compatibility tool found in Windows 7. If you have the latest driver downloaded to the desktop of your system, right click on the setup.exe of that driver and select TROUBLESHOOT COMPATIBILITY. Once it is selected it will check if it will be able to install the driver, if it has a possible workaround for you, it will submit 'Try Windows Recommended Settings' as a solution for you. If you will select it's setting, depending on the device and driver it may try to run the device in XP SP2 Compatibility mode. The limitations will be the same for the device. If it does not have that option it will only submit the 'Customize Settings' selection, this is where you would have to enter the specifics to load the driver.
Give the Troubleshoot Compatibility Tool a try and let us know if this assists you. One other note Sinon, you may want to delete the reference to the device out of device manager before starting the Troubleshoot Compatibility tool. To delete it out of device manager, click Start ORB / Right Click Computer and Select Properties / Device Manager - if you do not see it listed, be certain it is not listed as an UNKNOWN/Other Device. If it is listed as so click on it and delete it. Reboot your system and do not let it plug and play back. Thanks for using the 'Getting Ready for Windows 7' community forum. Please keep us advised if further assistance is necessary.

I haven't used the acx drivers since my card is a broadcom, but I'll relate my situation and hopefully that will give you some insight into what is going on.

My wireless card is in a laptop that I dual boot with Windows and Slackware. The Windows side uses whatever driver Dell provided. On the Slackware side, I use both bcm43xx and ndiswrapper. Since ndiswrapper uses a Windows driver, that is much like using it in Windows.
However, bcm43xx uses firmware files extracted from Windows drivers. I can (and do) move back and forth between ndiswrapper and bcm43xx without any real issue. Certainly bcm43xx writes over the existing firmware, but that doesn't hinder use with the Windows drivers, either under ndiswrapper or in Windows. As for a utility to read and save firmware, the closest thing I know if is, which may be specific to Broadcom chipsets and drivers. However, it is an open source project so you can take a look and see how generic it is.

I've gone ahead and went through the acx build/install steps as documented in several places. The instructions were great and, for once, matched my software libraries/versions/levels. My acx111 card is recognized and appears as wlan0 along with my rt2500 card at ra0. I removed the ra0 interface and configured wlan0 with the parameters to connect to my router. This does not work. Dhclient fails and wireless assistant cannot find my router. Which is physically on my other machine.

Dmesg has produced a lot of data from ACX which I have no idea what it means. I have gathered a LOT of debug data but am hesitant to post it because of the volume. If this is the right place for analysis help, I can post relevent pieces or the whole nine yards. Thanks for any help or suggestions.
Ted in Atlanta. I've gone ahead and went through the acx build/install steps as documented in several places. The instructions were great and, for once, matched my software libraries/versions/levels. Um, at the risk of appearing rude, why did you do this?

There is nothing magical about wlan0, so I would just leave it as ra0. Part 1 I used FwRad16.bin1.2.1.34 as the firmware load for this debug run. I have tried FwRad16.bin1.2.0.30 with similar results. For this test I removed my working Belkin adapter (rt2500 based at RA0) to prevent any conflicts with my Airlink 101 (acx based at WLAN0). Comparing the iwconfig output for both cards it would appear that the Airlink card shoud work.
I hope the answer will jump out from someone more knowlegeable than I am. I will re-install my rt2500 card to get to the Internet and add the output of iwconfig to show both cards at boot time. A bunch of thanks to you guys for your help. My environment is as follows: ECS RS482-M motherboard AMD Athlon 64 2 gig DDR memory Kubuntu 6.10 X64 Airlink 101 (no-working) & Belkin (working) wireless adapters Paid for 2001 Mercury Marquis in the garage. Quote: 29.611062 acx: compiled to use 32bit I/O access.
I/O timing issues might occur, such as non-working firmware upload. Report them Since you're using a 64 bit system this could be the cause of the trouble. You'll also notice in your iwconfig output that wlan0 is not associated with an access point. That isn't good, but may be a symptom rather than the problem. To be honest, I have NO experience in setting up acx on a 64 bit system. You might want to do some digging on the acx site as well as the Ubuntu/kubuntu forums and see if there is any advice.
All of the APIC errors are also concerning. You might try booting with apic=off in the boot parameters and see how that affects your computer's operations, particularly with the wireless access. Apic sometimes does get in the way of wireless. I have noticed the 'no IP associated' but don't know what to do about it. I've done some other testing.
I changed my rt2500 and ax111 cards to adhoc mode and then I fired up WINXP pro on my other machine and built an adhoc connection there. The XP machine and the rt2500 card are able to ping each other but the ax111 card wouldn't talk to either card I think the APIC problem is a motherboard thing. I noticed the messages (dozens of them) some time ago.
I turned off the APIC mode in the BIOS and tanked the whole thing. It wouldn't boot. I replaced the BIOS chip to fix the problem.
Am having a discussion with ETS about the situation. I will try the kernel thing. I'll continue my surfing. Someone else has got to have seen this same problem with ax111 and maybe solved it.
Thanks for your help. As part of this discussion, mention was made of the APIC messages that were in my dmesg output. DANGERDANGER if you have an ECS RS482-M mobo with an AMD 64 processor DO NOT DO NOT disable APIC mode in the bios OR put noapi on your kernel boot entry DANGERDANGER. Either action will disable your boot up. And you will have to re-flash your bios. The jumper to reset the CMOS does not do it.
I've contacted ECS and they evidently disown the problem. Yet they provided the mobo with the flaky bios support. Of course AMD has to know about the APIC messages and they keep selling the same trash.
Ted in Atlanta If anyone has a solution for this problem. Busted boot bios.
I and many others are listening.
